I went to Corpus for 2 days for some r&r with a couple buddies. Weather has been chilly latley and the water was near 50, so I knew things may be a little sluggish. Weather was beautiful, sun was out and winds were really calm. We were using finger mullet, it was the fist time one of the guys kayaked in salt so I figured bait would be the easiest and probably most productive route. We moved around quite a bit trying to find a bite, fishing some drains from a flat to the ICW without a bite. We headed over to the packery area around 5 that evening hoping to find something on the incoming tide. Fished there for about 3 hours with mullet and dead shrimp without any bites. I think we saw a single mullet all day and couldn't find any bait to cast net. I think that spoke a lot about the fishing.
Come today, We headed out in the same general area looking for deeper water. I hoped the warmer temps and sun may bring some fish in. We fished from 9-1 without any bites. Did see a lot more bait and was actually able to cast net quite a bit of finger mullet so that gave us some confidence. We were on a tight schedule and had to head back to SA by 2, so our last hour we tried for some sheepshead since nothing else was biting. To our excitement we had a constant sheep bite fishing some pilings for the last hour, Caught some keepers along with a few that were just under. After 2 days of fishing we were just glad to finally find a bite. We caught them using dead shrimp on the bottom right up next to the structure. Once the tide really started rolling in the bite shut off, which actually worked out as we had to get going. Talked to quite a few kayakers and boats, didnt seem like many people had much luck either days, but the weather made up for it.
How not to get your kayaks stolen off the trailer overnight when staying in a small cabin:
One gripe I have come from today's fishing and a word of caution. There were quite a few boats out today. We just crossed a channel and were pretty close to the shore paddling up it. Here comes a bay boat flying past us on the edge of the channel closest to us, probably within 20-25 yards. I didn't turn my nose to the wake fast enough, and came .2 seconds away from flipping. If I had not shifted my weight over as far as I had I definitely would have been in the water. Watch out for those boats, most of them we came across were very polite and slowed down for us, but like this guy some people just have no respect sadly. Stay safe!
