Winter time is a great time to fish....if you dont mind the cold. Thing is though, its been relativley warm with only one real cold front thus far this seaso.n. The best fishing I've ever had was the last week of december in Lighthouse Lakes. I enjoy it for the low tides and cool weather.
I headed out yesterday down to aransas pass. Took out the canoe and wanted to look at some new areas. The whole drift fishing thing is relativley new to me, but is something I have come to love. The area i generally drift is about 3 miles from the launch, but with it being open bay most of the way to get there, It is hard to get to in rough water, or fog, which there was a lot of Wednesday.
I launched at about 8, fog was thick but the wind was next to nothing. I launched off 361 and made my way slowly over to the back side of hog island. Almost right away I was hooking up to dink trout, right around the 15 mark, throwing a gold spoon and buggs. I kept 4 right off the bat, but was anticipating finding some larger girls, although I was really after some reds. I was drifting the back side (north shoreline) of hog island, or at least trying to. The wind made that pretty hard. I fished an area, then putted about 100 yards down and repeated. The porpoises were thick. I was fishing the entire day with at least a couple within a few hundred yards of me all day. I spent my morning catching these dinks- it was fun, but not was I was after.
Late morning I headed to a oyster bar just north of the island. I made several drifts with only a lost bite to show. On several drifts, I drifted over a few reds and saw a lot of sheeps. I changed from a spoon to the buggs. Looking back, I shoud have switched to the smaller buggs cury tail possibly, something smaller. Regardless they didnt want what I was throwing. I ended the day drifting the flat heading back to 361. The weather had cleared up to the point of being hot with a lot of sun, but the fish just werent there, or at least biting. Despit the smaller trout, It was still a great day. I got to explore a lot of water that I think could hold great potential in different conditions. Despite the shit forecast for saturday I am planning on heading back out and hitting up either some deeper reefs in nueces, or some other areas around aransas pass. Lure picture is of the new buggs I was throwing. The action in the water looks fantastic, with a slow sink rate. Go check it out, im bound to buy a few more.
