Finally got to get back out this past Saturday. I made my way over to the Freeport area to fish some back lakes I had never been to before. I got to the launch by about 830 and was met by some pretty calm water and a mob of Texas sized mosquitos. I bean with fishing along the grass shoreline as I made my way to a cut I had scouted on google maps. Within the first 10 minutes I hooked up with a redfish. Got it to the side of my kayak and as I reached for my net it came loose. I kept moving along the shallow shoreline and came to a small cover with a lot of movement under the surface. I got shallow enough to where I had to take my drive out, and as I approached a tail popped out of the water. I had the chance to get one good cast in to it but it was not interested in my TTF trout killer. It disappeared as quickly as it appeared, but I continued to chase wakes in this area for a good 30 minutes before deciding to move along.
I eventually came to the cut I had scouted on google maps, linking two small lakes together. I fished the mouth before going down into it and managed a 17" trout. Almost as soon as I took off down this cut, the mosquitos became absolutely terrible. I had no spray either. I tried to stick around and fish it but it just wasnt worth it, I had to move back out to more open water, they were stacked up in the more stagnant areas.
I finished out the trip pedaling around and scouting out the area since it was my first time out. Salt Lake has a lot of promise, and the cut from salt to nicks lake even looks real fishy. Next time I head back I am going to marinate my clothes in deet the night before and fish the cut.
There were a lot of other kayakers out. I think I got spoiled fishing the Port Aransas/Corpus areas as a lot of the places I went were usually pretty vacant. I am leaning towards the idea of fishing more of the matagorda or victoria area and bypassing the galveston area all together. The last several times I have gone out there were just more kayakers than I wanted to see around me. I may also need to just increase my range a little from the launch to get away from some of the more busy areas. Rain is in the forecast this weekend and will be out of town, going to be a long wait till March to head back out. Spring Break is also coming up pretty quick. If the weather cooperates, Im hoping to be out nearly every day.
Before I go, also wanted to speak of my experiences with the new Revo. The thing is awesome. When going too shallow, paddling it is surprisingly nice. This is one of the reasons I went with this over an Outback. My only complain is that I dont have a real good place for my fish bag. The tank well has enough room for a crate, and maybe a gallon of water behind that, and thats it. I generally take out 2-3 rods and a tackle tray, so I may ditch the crate and just put my fish bag back there. With the storage nets on the side inside the cockput, and the hatch in front of the seat, I can carry everything I need fishing gear related right next to me. If youre the type that takes out a lot of gear, the Revo probably isnt for you. I have always been a minimalist, so it suits me pretty well. I also loaded up back into the truck without a cart. Its pretty easy to handle out of the water.
