Headed out this morning with my dad with our sights set on corpus. I wanted to fish some new waters, and the weather and wind were looking pretty good for that spot. We launched at about 530 to very light winds and a clear sky. We started the morning off by fishing some shell and reefs in 1-2ft of water with topwaters. My dad was the first to hook up with a rat red, and soon after I landed a tout that looked just under keeper size, I didn't measure it. It looked like it was going to shape up to be a pretty good day.
We moved throughout some small islands in the marsh and saw some reds here and there. We couldn't get any to bite though. Splitting up I decided to go check out a grass shoreline less than a foot deep, there I saw several reds backing and working up and down the shoreline. I paddled up to a pocket and sneaked up to a backing red working a small pocket in the shoreline. After several casts that were either too far in front or benhind, I finally landed my gulp curly tail just in front of the red. As soon as he got close to it I gave it a few pops, I knew it was game on as soon as I saw him rush over to it. He picked it up and started swimming full speed towards me. I tried to hurry and reel in the slack, I was only able to get tension on the line for a few seconds and when I tried to set it he spit the hook. Talk about frustrating! I tried to chase down some others in the same area but they just weren't having it that morning. We switched up strategies and netted some finger mullet and fished some deeper water and shell for a little bit without much luck. We decided to head back out to the shoreline I had fished earlier to see if anything was going on and to our surprise found several reds working it again. These guys just wouldn't pay any attention to anything including finger mullet. We finished out the day fishing this shoreline but as it got warmer they disappeared. I did manage to pull out a keeper flounder while trying to sightcast a red. We didnt come out completley empty handed, but it would have been nice to snag a few of those reds teasing us. The weather was great and we were on the water so I cant complain too much. Also, this was a brand new area, so next time I think I have a much better idea of where to target and how. Will certainly be coming back again. Tight lines
