Inaugural Sliming
Location: On the flats in Corpus
Weather: partly cloudy, wind 10-15 eqrly on, WINDY in the afternoon
Tide: High tide ~6AM
Going to try to be a little more detailed as far as conditions. Decided to take out the canoe this morning to try to get some slot slime on it finally. Launched around 5:30 to be able to get out to my spot by sun up. I started out my morning wading a flat next to a channel with a top. Usually at least get a few blow ups but nothing after ~30 minutes. Headed into some channels and saw some reds up tight in the grass. Tried freelining a piggy perch up in it but ended up landing a PB skipjack! Great fun to real in, even better as bait. Cut that guy up and slapped it on a cork and ended up landing the first slot of the day. Soon after, my cork again shot down, a strong run, then slack...my knot to my hook came untied. I guess I got sloppy putting it on. That was the last of the action for the morning. I ended up bouncing around to a few different places switching between bait and lures, only coming up with a dink trout.
By about 11 I gave up with what I was doing and decided to drift the flats. Ive never caught anything doing this, then again I havent done it more than a few times. I found a protected fat as it had gotten pretty windy. Made my first drift using a 1/4oz weedless gold spoon and landed a slot red. With the drift only taking about 5 minutes, i motored back across the flat to position myself for another drift. Wouldnt ya know it, again blind casting across the flat I landed another slot. There was only about 20 minutes between the two fish. At this point it was about noon, my fish bag was out of ice, and the wind had picked up substantially, making my ~3 mile run back to the truck in the bay chop pretty sketchy. I decided to head in despite the two i had just picked up. It took nearly 3x as long to get back as it did to get there. This canoe does not like big chop, and boy was it choppy.
I had just gotten a new 30# motor guide trolling motor and mount for the bow of the canoe. Evidently the mount wasn't quite up to spec, as I motored up to my first spot of the morning, across a deep channel, the mount came off and down went the motor and mount. 200$, never even used it, gone. With that being said, it could have been worse (skunked).
All in all it was a great day. Usually prefer CPR'ing any fish, but I think I deserved a little something something today. Still on the hunt for that CCA Tag...
