Been a good while since I was out last. I saw this cold front hit and had second thoughts about going out, but I said what the heck.
Hit up Port Aransas flats. I knew if they were going to bite, it'd be when the water warmed up. I launched at 7:30 to about 50 degrees and clear, calm skies. I launched off 361 and first began by scoping out some areas a little further west. Made a couple drifts and waded a little around the intercoastal with nothing to show. I knew things were going to pick up closer to noon so I stuck it out.
I am glad I stayed. I started a drift along the ICW as shown in the picture below. Picked up a couple dink trout and a rat red. Made the same drift again and got several bumps. On one retrieval I saw a trout try to strike the lure, they were just barley tapping it, was hard to distinguish grass from the fish. Seeing this, I slowed down the retrieve and started getting hook ups. Bite turned on around noon. Using a white hydra buggs with a grub tail and bouncing in through potholes, I picked up my limit of trout. Threw several keepers back along with a lot of dinks. Largest trout went 19".
This is not my go to flat, in fact I had only fished it once before without any luck, but with the NE wind, it made for a great drift parallel to the ICW. I packed up by 230, bite had slowed but left them biting as I had to make the drive back to San Antonio.
